Kettering police said two separate car fires the occurred only minutes apart Friday morning are suspicious.
Firefighters were first dispatched to the 4400 block of Flowerdale Avenue around 1:50 a.m. on a reported car fire.
Only 20 minutes later, firefighters were dispatched to the area of Orangewood Drive and Sunray Road on a second car fire around 2:10 a.m.
Kettering Police Lt. Holly Murchland said it was unknown if the two fires are connected, but are suspicious due to the close proximity of location and time.
Officers said it would have been possible for the same suspects to set both fires, due to the locations only being about a half-mile apart.
Brad Ditzell, the owner of the vehicle torched on Sunray Road, said he woke up to police knocking on his door and firefighters extinguishing the blaze.
“They broke into [it], and from our understanding, poured gasoline inside and lit the car on fire,” Ditzell said. “When I heard this had happend to other cars in the area, it made me feel better that someone wasn’t targeting us, as much as a random act of stupidity.”
Ditzell was very calm and laughing when he described his experience, saying ‘it is what it is.’
“Maybe its just in my getting older and wiser. You realize stupid people do stupid things at random times,” he said.
Murchland said the cause of both fires are unknown and fire investigators will investigate the incidents.
Both vehicles are total losses. No injuries were reported.
