Curtis Gray, the 28-year-old former Oregon District restaurant waiter found guilty of purposeful murder in the stabbing of a homeless man in October 2013, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
Gray learned his fate Wednesday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court in the killing of Daniel Mooty, 51, who was found behind a Quitman Street house. Police were dispatched there after callers to police reported hearing screaming coming from the area of the vacant home in the 300 block.
Police said they found Gray standing over the body, which had more than 100 stab wounds. Gray tried to run, but was apprehended after a short distance.
Mooty was homeless at the time of his death and had a history of arrests and felony convictions for breaking and entering, forgery and drug possession dating to 1999.
Gray is the son of Ann Marie “Mario” Gallin, a former Dayton Public Schools board member.
The judge also ordered that once Gray is released from prison, he will be required to be supervised by the state parole authority for the rest of his life.
