MONTGOMERY COUNTY — Weights and measures staff will resume gas pump inspections in Montgomery County after they were paused for a month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The inspectors from the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office resumed the inspections of pump accuracy today but with new guidelines in place for social distancing, an auditor’s office spokesperson said in a media release.

Inspections will be done in open air areas away from consumers with inspectors working solo, instead of in pairs, and wearing masks and gloves. Inspectors will also postpone inspections if a station is found to be too busy.

Inspections are unannounced and will check the accuracy of each pump by pumping five gallons of gas into a certified container. Credit card readers will also be inspected for illegal devices during the inspections.

“This virus has put financial burdens on both consumers and small businesses. The last thing anyone needs right now is to be ripped-off by a faulty gas pump,” Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith said in the media release.

“Our inspectors look out for the interests of both consumers and retailers by ensuring the accuracy of our gas pumps.”

Those who experience issues with gas pumps are asked to file a report online with the auditor’s office at mcauditor.org or by calling 937-225-6309.
