The tournament announced June 5 that patrons would be able to attend the 45th edition of the Memorial with practices in place to promote attendees’ health and safety.
This has since changed “due to the rapidly changing dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic,” a tweet from #theMemorial read on Monday.
Due to the rapidly changing dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic, we, alongside the @PGATOUR and @Nationwide have made the decision to host the 2020 #theMemorial Tournament without fans on site.

“We applaud the leadership, diligence and partnership it took from Jack Nicklaus, Dan Sullivan, the entire Memorial Tournament staff and State, County and City leadership to build a solid plan that would allow for limited fan attendance at next week’s event,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan in a release. “But given the broader challenges communities are facing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we need to stay focused on the No. 1 priority for our Return to Golf — the health and safety of all involved.”
Governor DeWine approved a phased approach mid-June which would allow 20 percent maximum capacity on property, but has supported the PGA and Memorial Tournament’s recent decision.
“I know it was a difficult decision to make, but the organizers of the Memorial Tournament have put the health and safety of players and fans first,” said DeWine in a release.
The Memorial Tournament is scheduled July 14 through 19 at the Murfield Village Golf Club.
