The coronavirus has impacted every aspect of daily life, including saying goodbye to loved ones who have passed away during the pandemic.
Due to social distancing concerns, the governor banned gatherings of over 10 people, and Adkins Funeral Home in Enon have resorted to virtual funerals ever since.
“We set a camera up on our chapel, focus on the podium, and when the ministers ready to start, we start Facebook Live,” funeral director Walter Adkins says.
Though Adkins recognizes the experience isn’t quite the same, the virtual funeral allows for loved ones anywhere in the world to still experience the service.
“It’s still not the same as being able to get a hug, being able to be beside someone."
That being said, Adkins says the idea has been so popular among the grieving, they may continue the practice after the pandemic (in addition to a traditional service).
For those who live out of town, or have health issues preventing them from outings, the alternative provides a more convenient way to honor their loved one.
