Coronavirus is creating problems down on the dairy farm nationally and in the Miami Valley. The American Dairy Association said dairy farmers are being forced to dump their milk due to the shutdown and grocery stores are putting a limit on the amount of milk a shopper can buy.
According to the ADA, there is plenty of milk available but the part of the problem is that the demand for dairy products has dried up. With schools closed and restaurants only doing carryout and delivery, the dairy industry is now mostly supplying grocery stores.
Then, came a run of milk and the supermarket put a limit on the amount of milk that a shopper could purchase because of angry customers. That was because everyone was buying milk and stocking up, according to the American Dairy Association.
On the dairy farms, there’s not enough space to process and store all the milk before it has to be thrown out. The milk has to leave the farm every 24 to 48 hours to make space for the next round of milk.
The ADA estimates the loss of $4 to $5 billion at the farm level alone. The association is asking the stores to lift the limits and trust the system.
