A fire in a detached garage at an address on Clifton Avenue in Springfield caused damage to a corner of the home as well.
The fire happened in the 2100 block of Clifton.
The residents of the house were able to get out safely.
“The family was home and everyone reports that the family is okay,” said Bob Smith, Batallion Chief with the Springfield Fire Department.
Christopher Perkins rents the home and said he was woken by his daughter saying someone had knocked on the door and alerted her to the garage on fire.
“It was smoking really bad when I came out,” Perkins said. “I tried to get my hose out but my hose was frozen. It’s winter time.”
He said the garage contained items left over from renters in the past, including possibly a mattress.
