SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE @ 3:34 a.m.:
The areas around East Columbia Street and North Fountain Road are now open. The cause of the accident is currently being investigated by traffic services, according to dispatch reports.

INITIAL REPORT
At least three people have been taken to hospitals from a two-vehicle accident, with entrapment, in the area of East Columbia and North Fountain avenues.
The injuries are reported to be serious, a Springfield police lieutenant said.
The accident was reported just before 7:30 p.m. and police are investigating.
According to the very preliminary investigation, a red pickup truck headed west on Columbia apparently ran a red light and hit a sedan.
Police have shut down traffic on streets in the area of the accident until further notice.
