Rime ice and hoar frost: What caused the formations on trees Wednesday morning?

The winter months can be brutal, but if the conditions are right, it can actually be quite beautiful.

Two relatively rare types of frost, rime ice and hoar frost, can form in the frigid weather. Rime ice forms in the presence of fog, more specifically freezing fog. The suspended, supercooled droplets contact a surface below freezing and turn to ice.

Hoar frost, on the other hand, forms in clear, calm conditions. In this type of frost, suspended water vapor freezes on contact with a sub-freezing surface, skipping the water phase going straight to ice.

Rime ice tends to be thicker than hoar frost due to the greater amount of moisture found in the fog droplets.

This morning some parts of the area saw some fog that led to the formation of rime ice.
