Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast: Drought, warm weather impacts fall colors

Drought and very warm weather this summer and early fall is impacting more than just farmers!

This week on Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast, Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs and Kirstie Zontini sit down with Tyler Stevenson, a forester from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to talk about fall color for 2019.

As days get shorter and nights get cooler, changes take place among the trees. The shorter days allow for a breakdown of chlorophyll in the leaves, which reveals the beautiful fall colors we want to see! As nights get cooler another process takes place, the trees produce an abscission layer which starts to cut the leaves off from the trees.

October is a big month for fall color and the weather in the spring and summer can impact what goes on each fall. Drought conditions can stress trees and very warm weather can also impact fall color. Stevenson explains what he thinks will happen to the fall color change across the state because of this past summer.

The group also discusses a special task force that examined trees damaged by the Memorial Day tornado outbreak and what homeowners can do if they are still cleaning up.
