Another year, another state title up in Maria Stein. That’s five in the last six seasons for Marion Local, but 2017 could be as young a team as the Flyers have put on the field in quite some time.

“It’s definitely a different feel this year,” long-time head coach Tim Goodwin said. “We only have two starters back on both sides of the ball. We have high expectations as always but it is a lot of new faces.”

One veteran face that will help is senior tackle John Dirksen. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound standout has committed to play at Notre Dame.

“I feel like it’s a lot of energy,” Dirksen said. “I think we’re coming together a lot. Obviously we’re young and it will be more of a hitting thing than an experience thing.”

For the second year in a row the Flyers kick off the season against the Chaminade-Julienne Eagles. This time on Aug. 25 at Booster Stadium in Maria Stein.
