The crash happened near Parthenon Restaurant in Washington, D.C., WRC reported.

At least eight people were hurt, five of them critically, when the driver lost control and crashed into them as they dined outside at around 12:15 p.m., police said, according to The Washington Post.

One of those with life-threatening injuries, a woman, has died, WRC reported.

They were all taken to area hospitals. Their ages ranged from approximately 30 to 80, WRC reported.

Three other people were evaluated at the scene but did not need to go to a hospital, The Washington Post reported.

Officials said an elderly man had lost control of the SUV and that “all indications are this was truly accidental,” Second District Commander Duncan Bedlion told WRC.

Fire officials determined there was no damage to the restaurant, the WJLA reported.
