IRVINE, Calif. — A 14-year-old boy is accused of robbing a woman as she walked home from a California shopping center, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Irvine Police Department, the teen was booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of robbery, possession of stolen property and assault with a deadly weapon.
Officers responded at about 8:37 p.m. PDT on Wednesday to an area near the Quail Hill shopping center in Irvine, according to the release.
The victim was walking home when she was robbed by two males, Irvine police spokesperson Sgt. Karie Davies told The Orange County Register. One of the suspects threatened the woman with a gun and a struggle ensued, according to the newspaper.
Police said that one of the suspects took one of the woman’s bags and fled the scene in a black sedan, KTLA-TV reported.
One of the stolen items in the bag was an electronic device “with tracking capabilities,” police said.
Police tracked the device to San Bernardino County on Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Times. A suspect leaving an apartment in Hesperia allegedly entered a vehicle, the newspaper reported.
Police followed the suspect to a shopping center in Apple Valley and the 14-year-old boy was arrested without incident, the Register reported.
Police stated that the officers also recovered the electronic device.
Davies told the Register that after obtaining a search warrant, detectives recovered money, a handgun without serial and ammunition.
An investigation is ongoing, police said.
