Third victim in fiery Trotwood crash was young mother

TROTWOOD — 35-year-old Leah Smith died after a car ran a red light and hit her as she was taking her 3-year-old son home.

Smith was visiting her father before she and her son left to go home.

“My daughter left here and five minutes later, she was dead,” said Zachary Smith, her father.

Smith said his daughter was following the rules, doing what she was “supposed to do” at the intersection of Little Richmond and Olive road, and claims the driver of the car that ran the red light was doing what he “wanted to do.”

“Blatant, blatant disrespect for any other community member is what that is, undeniable,” explained Smith.

Smith also said he was upset anyone died in the crash, referring to the two Trotwood graduates, Michael Stephens and Elgin Wilson.

Leah Smith worked as a home health care aide to support her three children: 14-year-old Jaden, 10-year-old Namiah and 3-year-old Kyrie.

A bystander pulled Kyrie out of the car after the accident.

Zachary Smith told News Center 7 that he wanted the other driver, 19-year-old Antonion Ward, to be prosecuted and face a long sentence.

Ohio State troopers are handling this investigation and will present their evidence to prosecutors for review when they are finished.
