Deputy Daniel J. Kin died at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Thursday afternoon.

Deputy Kin, of Upper Sandusky, was ferrying the inmate in a Dodge Wyandot County Sheriff’s van north on state Route 104 when a collision occurred just after 11 a.m. with a Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Steven Short, of Mount Sterling.

Short, who had a 4-year girl with him as a passenger, was headed east on state Route 56.

The collision occurred at state Routes 56 and 104 in Jackson Twp.

Short also was taken to Grant in Columbus, where he reportedly was in stable condition Thursday afternoon. His passenger was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The inmate, who was not identified by name, was taken to Ohio Health Berger Hospital and remains in custody there, according to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.

The conditions of the girl and the inmate were not available.

Kin had picked up the inmate at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution in Ross County and was returning that person to Wyandot County for a court hearing, according to the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.

Thursday evening, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued this statement regarding Deputy Kin:

“Time and tears will not wash away the grief created by the loss of Deputy Kin. My deepest condolences are with this deputy’s family and his family in blue. I am forever grateful for everyone who answers the call to serve and protect.”
