Ohio Public Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff announced the probable case of monkeypox during a brief news conference Monday afternoon. The person was only identified as an adult male living in the state and he is currently isolating, Vanderhoff said.

The probable cause comes as multiple cases have been reported across the world and multiple states in recent weeks.

“Monkeypox does not spread easily between people. And so the risk to Ohioans is very low,” Vanderhoff said.

“Monkeypox is not like COVID-19 which as we know can be spread easily from person to person through several feet. In contrast, monkeypox spreads between people primarily through direct contact with infectious sores, scabs or body fluids. It also can be spread by respiratory secretions during prolonged face to face contact,” Vanderhoff said.

This is a developing story and we will continue providing updates as we learn more.
