In January, nearly $209 million in revenue were generated by online and retail locations offering sports betting. That’s compared to just over $1 billion that all casinos generated in 12 months in 2022, according to OCC data.

Locally, in the Miami Valley, total revenue of $256,038 in just sports betting was brought in within the first month, between two locations, Miami Valley Gaming and Racing in Lebanon and Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway.

The revenue brought in is taxable under the new Ohio sports betting law. Sports gambling is subject to a ten percent tax that requires the business to file monthly returns with the Ohio Department of Taxation.

Ninety-eight percent of the gathered taxes will be given to both public and private schools in Ohio to help fund interscholastic athletics and other extracurricular activities, on a quarterly schedule determined by the state.
