Westbound I-70 was closed for several hours as crews cleared debris. The highway reopened around 2:49 a.m. on Tuesday.

Simmons described the crash as uncommon and advised drivers to remain aware of the distance between vehicles.

"Pay attention, check your speeds and leave enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you at all times," Simmons said.

Farther west, also on I-70 near Richmond, traffic was slowed because of a tanker rollover near Indiana 227.
