Miami Township development survey worries some mobile home park residents

MIAMI TOWNSHIP — Miami Township officials posted a survey seeking input from residents regarding a new comprehensive plan about 14 areas that surround Austin Landing, including a mobile home park.

The township posted the survey, that has some of the residents concerned about their future, to its website and social media Monday.

The survey asked two questions:

  • Do you support additional uses in this area?
  • Should the township spend taxpayer money to buy the available land?

Developers are looking into the area at the corner of Austin Boulevard and Wood Road that is mostly wooded but also has Oakwood Village mobile home park nearby.

“I can’t imagine starting over. This was our first home,” said Debbie Borrero of Miami Township.

Borrero and her family have lived at Oakwood Village for five years.

She said she owns her home but rents the land it’s on.

“It was a big shock,” said Borrero. “We are hoping to get more information from the township, if they purchase it, what their plans are.”

The survey included what is called “Area 10″ that includes open land and a manufactured mobile home park, which is Oakwood Village.

“Anybody can take the survey, whether they live in the township or note. This doesn’t affect them,” Borrero said.

There are no development plans for “Area 10″ and any existing developments in the area will remain, Miami Township Communication Coordinator Jill Drury released in a statement.

“We are simply working on the township’s vision for the future and want our residents to have a say in the township’s future,” she said in the statement.

Miami Township is hosting a steering committee meeting this month.

Residents told News Center 7′s Katy Andersen that they plan to attend in hopes to get more answers.

“I realize they want growth, but I look at their website and they talk about how important community is, and how they have a lot of new businesses but not a lot of new residents to move in,” Borrero said. “But they’re considering taking over 500 plus homes, 500 plus families who live in their township.”
