The concern over the spread of COVID-19, especially with new variant stains, is prompting a new warning about proper mask wearing.

Healthcare workers are discouraging the use of vent masks, which have a plastic or metal vent at the side or middle of the mask.

“If I happen to have Covid and I’m wearing my mask and trying to protect everyone around it, having that exhalation vent allows air, infected with those particles, to be coming out of that mask through a concentrated exit rather than acting as a barrier, so it can actually increase the risk of transmission,” said Miami Valley Hospital Chief Medical Officer at Miami Valley Hospital.

Those that like these masks believe they are easier to wear and breathe in.

Premier Health no longer allows vent masks in their facilities, said Dr. Colon.
