Lyrid meteor shower puts on a show this week

After a meteor shower drought, the first meteor shower since January is active this week. The Lyrid meteor shower will peak Wednesday, April 22 during the early morning hours. Head outside between midnight and 6 a.m. early Wednesday to try and find some meteors.

This shower isn’t very active, only producing about 10-15 meteors per hour, but if you are patient, you might see one. The good news in that Wednesday morning, we will have clear skies here in the Miami Valley. You also don’t have to worry about moonlight, we go into a new moon phase Wednesday, so the sky will be dark!

The best way to view a meteor shower is to find a spot away from city lights. Get a lawn chair, sleeping bag or blanket and give your eyes time to adjust. If you find any meteors, share your experience on our WHIO Facebook page!
