‘Your children are supposed to bury the father;’ Father grieves son killed in Miami Co. crash

SPRINGFIELD — The family of an 8-year-old boy killed in a car crash in Miami County earlier this month is remembering him as a loving boy as they laid him to rest Thursday.

Samuel Wyatt Lockhart, who went by Wyatt, was killed in a crash on Washington Road near Troy on April 5. Wyatt was in the car with his mother and 14-year-old sister when they were hit by a trash truck.

Family and friends said Wyatt was caring and full of energy. He loved video games and the outdoors.

“I wish everybody could’ve met him,” Chris Lockhart, Wyatt’s father, said.

Lockhart said he’s leaning on his faith and his family during to help him get through this unimaginably painful time.

“Your children are supposed to bury the father or the parents and it’s hard because it’s just awful, the hardest thing I ever had to do was today,” Lockhart told News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis.

Dr. Debbie Wotring, grades K-2 Principal at Ohio Virtual Academy, remembered Wyatt as a a quiet child.

“But very, very sweet young man once we got him talking in class on the webcam, using his microphone. You could tell he was just a really smart little guy,” Wotring said.

Wyatt was a second grader at Ohio Virtual Academy. Worting told News Center 7 that the school is offering counseling to students and staying in touch with his close relatives.

“We want to make sure that the family is supported and taken car of, and definitely reaching out to other students in Wyatt’s class and making sure they’re doing okay,” she said.
