Urbana woman, 81, killed in Logan County crash

An 81-year-old Urbana woman was killed in a Logan County crash Tuesday afternoon at U.S. 68 and County Road 5 that sent another driver to Miami Valley Hospital and also killed the dog traveling with that second driver.

Norma Jeannine Thomas-Smith, who was driving a blue Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was headed south on 68 when she went left of center and hit an oncoming small red Toyota Tacoma pickup, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol post at Marysville. Thomas-Smith died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, 48-year-old Melanie Manns of Ada, was talking with rescuers as she was flown by CareFlight to the hospital. Her injuries were not life threatening, according to the state patrol.

A small dog in Manns's truck was killed in the collision, News Center 7's Layron Livingston said.

Rescue crews had to cut away the car door to get Thomas-Smith from her vehicle. A trooper at the scene said the accident may have involved a medical issue because a preliminary investigation indicates there are no skid marks to indicate braking.

The accident, which occurred at about 3 p.m., remains under investigation, according to the patrol.
