2 injured and hospitalized after house fire on Irwin St.; Investigation underway

DAYTON — Crews responded to a house fire that would go onto displace nearly a dozen people just days before Thanksgiving.

The fire started in a house residing in the 200 block of North Irwin Street at around 10:15 a.m. Crews took approximately five and a half hours to put the fire out.

News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis previously reported that Dayton Firefighters had to call in mutual aid after the fire could be seen from blocks away.

Kettering Fire, Oakwood Public Safety, Beavercreek Fire, and Wright Patterson Air Force Base helped the 16 responders from Dayton Fire with the incident, a spokesperson for Dayton Fire told News Center 7.

The flames were dangerously close as firefighters had to knock down flames that were amplified by the wind, Dayton Fire Department Captain Tyler McCoy said.

The fire also spread to neighboring homes as “the wind was pushing embers all around the neighborhood,” McCoy stated.

The structure that initially caught on fire was deemed a “total loss” while four nearby homes sustained damage, the spokesperson said. One had damage to the roof while the other had damage along its side.

Demo crews tore down what was left of the house where the fire started.

Two people were injured in the fire, the spokesperson said. They sustained smoke inhalation and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Thankfully, they were able to self-evacuate before suffering more harm.

11 residents were displaced from this event; however, Red Cross did provide assistance, the spokesperson stated.

The cause of the fire still remains under investigation.
