More than 800 students, faculty, and staff volunteers filled campus today to help first-year students.
“The energy here is beautiful. I mean, they always talk about community at Dayton, and you really see it here, and it’s beautiful,” Frankie Oriani, first-year student, said.

Oriani and his brother are getting ready for their first year at UD.
They actually got to move in a week ago, as students part of the Flyer Promise Scholars program.
“Everyone’s very excited. Everyone is very kind. The people moving in, I can tell they’re a little bit stressed, but they’ll definitely settle in. They’ve got a lot of help here,” Cecelia Oriani said.
This year, the university is offering a new course for first years, which will discuss how they can use AI to their advantage and responsibly.
“Our goal is to introduce students from day one that this is a value for the University of Dayton and that we want them to know how they’re gonna be able to use it responsibly,” Casey Gill, vice president for student development, said.
Gill said there are two AI modules the students will be required to take.
She explained the university understands AI is not going away, so they just hope students can utilize safe academic practices through these modules.
Gill also said there are several resources available to all new students, including leaning on upperclassmen for help.
