TROTWOOD — Nearly three years later, the recovery efforts from the 2019 Memorial Day tornadoes continues in many parts of the Miami Valley. We continue to see the community coming together to help.

Today, a Trotwood woman, who’s apartment was destroyed in the tornadoes received a brand-new home.

Sonya North lived at the Foxton Apartments when the tornadoes hit in 2019. Her home was destroyed, and North was devastated.

“Devastating. Don’t know if you’re going to make it out,” North said. “I was homeless for 10 months.”

For those 10 months, North had to move from place to place. She lost everything.

“I had to start all over. I lost everything,” North said. “Furniture, bedding and stuff like that.”

However, North is taking a first look at her new home. “It’s a place of my own. My own home,” she said. “It’s a brand-new home – lovely. It’ll be two weeks tomorrow that I put in my application.”

North will be one of the first people to move into a new Pathways home.

“First one out of 16,” Steve Naas, President of County Corp, said.

“We’ve got about 9 or 10 that are in this state ready to go. A number of them are under contract already,” Naas said.

County Corp is a partner is in the Pathways projects. He said their goad is to help tornado survivors like North.

“We’re pleased with how quickly they came together,” Naas said. “I think it’s safe to say we would not be able to deliver homes like this without the tremendous amount of volunteer commitment.”

One of the volunteers at the home unveiling, Wayne Kopp, who is with Brethren Disaster Ministry, said, “When we first came in it was pretty rough. One of things we learned with disasters is, there’s so man people that are put out, not even a hotel room.”

County Corp said they hope to continue building new homes through the Pathways Project as the need persists in the community.
