Tecumseh ‘Lunch Bus’ delivers meals to neighborhoods while students learn online

CLARK COUNTY — The Tecumseh Local School District’s admired ’Lunch Bus’ is back this year for at least the first nine weeks of school while students learn virtually at home.

Six school buses roll out three times a week with stops in the Donnelsville/Medway, New Carlisle and Park Layne areas to deliver meals to families. Each stop is visited once a week.

There are some changes compared to last spring during the stay-at-home order. Tecumseh students will now receive five breakfasts and five lunches with all food groups represented.

The meals come frozen so all that families will need to do is warm them up at home. What students get will follow the district’s current breakfast and lunch menus.

“A lot of families don’t have the opportunity to have a lot of food in their house and by getting this -- this is great,” Tecumseh great-grandma Winifred Keiter told News Center 7′s Jenna Lawson.

Nearly 50 percent of the Tecumseh district qualifies for free and reduced lunch. While consistent nutrition is certainly needed, so is normalcy.

Fifth-grader David Keiter said it’s good to see the cafeteria workers, and sometimes even his teachers helping at the bus, while taking a break from being behind his computer.

“I think it’s really encouraging and honestly,I like the music,” he said.

One of the lunch buses that departs from Donnelsville Elementary School is decked out with welcoming signs and a boombox to make kids feel like they’re at school -- even when they’re not.

“The more fun we have, the more fun the kids have,” said Donnelsville Elementary Kitchen Manager Angie Combs, who captains the bus.

Combs said the program is currently being underutilized by families, and she welcomed more to come out to one of the stops in their neighborhood.

The program is open to any student in the district with money on their lunch account.

Once at a stop, the student will need to know their lunch four-digit PIN number, their name and their school building.
