DAYTON — Multiple recent crime alerts have some University of Dayton students concerned for their safety.

In eight days, three alerts came from UD’s Department of Public Safety.

“Dayton kind of thrives on the aspect of community, which I think is very true, but obviously there’s always creeps around there and bad people,” Vince Demarco, a sophomore at UD said.

“I think it’s definitely scary, to see these safety alerts and know that’s happening so close to me,” Alyssa Hampton, also a student at UD said.

On Aug. 28 the school sent out a message for a reported stalking situation saying two female students said they came across a man who claimed to be an undercover police officer.

Six days later, UD sent an alert that said two thefts were reported in the same night.

Monday morning, the school said two female students reported five men approached them and started harassing them.

They would not stop, unless one of the woman hugged them, according to the alert.

The alert said the men then groped her before the women could leave.

“I don’t think like males understand it as much as females, because it’s just a different, it’s just a whole different perspective, but I think as a female, it makes me feel a lot more unsafe,” Hampton said.

Hampton said she was near the area of the alleged assault when it happened.

“It’s crazy to think that I was so close to something like that,” she said.

News Center 7 reached out to UD for an interview. A spokesperson said the school is continuing to communicate information to students about safety.
