Rita’s to stop offering custard: Blame bird flu

Rita’s on East Stroop Road has joined its sister locations throughout the nation in transitioning to a “premium frozen ice cream” as an alternative to its frozen custard because of Avian bird flu.

The spike in the bird flu in the United States has caused a shortage of eggs, a key ingredient in Rita’s award-winning custard.

Wednesday, an official with the Philadelphia-based chain Rita’s Ice said the transition began a week ago, so chain locations will use up the custard have in stock.

There is no estimate on when the custard will return to the menu, officials said.
