Egg back in bald eagle nest at Carillon Park after windstorm damage

DAYTON — The saga continues over the Carillon Park eagle’s nest after wind damaged the nest and an egg last month.

Now, people are back on eaglet watch, because the nest is repaired and a new egg is now in it.

Orv and Willa’s 2022 story is full of twist and turns just three months into the year.

“I always say it’s an adventure, because you never know what’s going to happen,” said Jim Weller, a Carillon Park eagle expert.

After Orv and Willa’s nest collapsed in mid-February, the pair got to work rebuilding their home, carrying as many as 30 sticks a day.

“They both worked together diligently,” Weller said.

Over the past four years, the couple has welcomed nine eaglets.

Weller said they are now showing signs there is a new egg in the nest and that the two are still mating. He thinks the egg, or perhaps eggs, will hatch early next month.

“They’re starting a new family here within this nest,” Weller said. “The nest isn’t all that big. What’s going to happen when those babies get moving around up in that nest? Going to be pretty crowded.”

In the meantime, Weller hopes Orv and Willa continue making their nest bigger. But, he knows - even as his eagle eye watches their every move - he has no control over their story.

“They’ll do whatever they want to do. First of all, they’re a federal bird, so they make all the rules. Secondly, they are wild creatures and they do what they need to do to survive. And, it’s all about survival,” Weller said.
