MIAMI VALLEY — UPDATE @ 7:55 p.m. (Aug. 7): National Night Out against crime activities are in full swing throughout the Miami Valley. Many of the events will continue until 9 p.m.
Law enforcement agencies throughout the Miami Valley will be hosting National Night Out against crime activities on Aug. 7 in conjunction with national observations of the event meant to build community-police partnerships.
This is the 35th year for National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. More than 16,000 communities from nearly all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases throughout the world take part on the first Tuesday in August (Texas celebrates on the first Tuesday in October).
In Dayton, Public Health Dayton & Montgomery County is partnering with the Residence Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA) and CareSource to host its event from 4 to 8 p.m. at Residence Park.
The Dayton event will include free food and music with the police department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The 3DI Drill, Drum and Dance Team will make an appearance.
The event is intended to promote neighborhood camaraderie, enhance neighbor-law enforcement relations and improve safety, according to the release.
"A key part of living a healthy life is having a safe place to live,” said Jeff Cooper, PHDMC health commissioner. “Exposure to crime and violence can increase the risk of smoking, alcohol and drug abuse; mental illness, anxiety disorders and chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.”
Many events throughout the region will include demonstrations featuring K-9s, dunk tanks, hot air balloon rides, slip n slides, emergency helicopter landings, safety stations, blood drives and more.
