A busted water pipe damaged three apartments at a senior citizens Masonic Community.
A pipe that feeds an emergency sprinkler system failed at the Cunningham Place, 2655 W. National Road, as frigid weather continued Tuesday afternoon.
Springfield Fire Capt. Eric Shively said the pipe ruptured in the attic above an apartment, and the ceiling collapsed in the bedroom.
The residents were home but not in the bedroom. They were not injured.
Shively said two apartments on the first floor were also damaged by water.
He said the pipe was insulated, but it wasn't enough to prevent the water inside from freezing.
