Students face expulsion for joke about planned shooting

Sidney High School

UPDATE @ 2:49 p.m.

Two Sidney High School students were suspended today after they were allegedly joking around in the hallway about carrying out a shooting during the lunch period.

The 10th-graders are facing criminal charges after their conversation was overheard by another student who reported them to the school resource officer, according to Sidney Schools Superintendent John Scheu.

One student allegedly said, "It's going down in the cafeteria today,” and when asked to clarify, another student replied he was going to shoot up the cafeteria, according to Scheu.

Plain clothes officers and the district’s “first responders” were present and visible during the lunch period and the school day proceeded without any problems, Scheu said.

Sidney police also responded to “sweep” the parking lot this afternoon in search of any potential threats.

Scheu said he does not believe the threat was credible, but such incidents must be taken seriously and he will be recommending that the students are expelled from the district.
