Packages stolen from East Dayton homes

DAYTON — Packages delivered to two Dayton homes in recent days have been stolen and now police are looking for who is responsible.

Officers took a report at a house in the 1700 block of Gummer Avenue after someone stole two packages containing Air Jordan shoes delivered to the residence after an online purchase.

Another report was filed in the first block of Pierce Street, where a resident reported someone stole a Fed-Ex package delivered to the house.

Police are warning people to beware of porch pirates if you plan to shop online for gifts this holiday.

Officers say they are seeing more cases of people stealing packages from front porches as internet shopping becomes more common.

However, investigators say residents are starting to help slow the thefts with technology advances.

“The Ring doorbells and some of the other systems that are out have really kind of put somewhat of a curb on that, because now people who are doing that can be identified,” officer Joe Ferrell with the Kettering Police Department said.

In the Pierce Street case in Dayton, the resident said the thief may have been captured stealing the package on camera.

Fed-Ex said they recommend having packages delivered to a family member’s home who will be home or requiring a signature for the package to be delivered.

According to the FBI, one in five homeowners were targeted by porch pirates in 2017.
