Dayton man, 57, killed in shooting sparked by ‘longstanding domestic situation’

DAYTON — A man shot and killed on Xenia Avenue Sunday tried to get into another man’s car before that man shot him in what police said appears to be a domestic-related shooting.

Wayne Bowman, 57, of Dayton, was identified as the man killed in the shooting, Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger said Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the shooting around 11 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Xenia Avenue.

“The initial investigation revealed that the deceased had accosted the individual responsible for the shooting by blocking his vehicle in with his own,” police said in a statement. “The deceased exited his vehicle and began striking the other involved individual’s vehicle and attempted to open the driver’s side door.”

That’s when police said the shooter fired a gun, hitting Bowman.

“This incident appears to stem from a longstanding domestic situation between the deceased and his girlfriend who is an acquaintance of the other involved individual’s wife,” police said.

The prosecutor’s office will review the case to determine if any charges will be filed.
