West Carrollton officer accidentally shoots self at Franklin police firing range

An officer was shot in the leg at the Franklin PD shooting range Friday.

UPDATE @ 12:20 p.m.: 

A West Carrollton officer accidentally shot himself in the leg at the Franklin police firing range Friday morning, according to police.

The officer, only identified as a veteran of at least 10 years, was at the range for an annual qualification when he shot himself while holstering his weapon, according to West Carrollton Deputy Police Chief David Wessling and Franklin police.

The officer was transported to Kettering Medical Center in stable condition and is expected to be ok, according to police. 

“He’s proficient, but sometimes incidents happen. This is an unfortunate event,” Wessling said.

West Carrollton police use the Franklin police range for standard qualifications that occur annually and biannually, Wessling said. 

Additional details, including the officer’s identity, were not released.

UPDATE @ 11:10 a.m.: 

An officer shot in the leg at the Franklin police firing range is from a different department that was using the range, according to Franklin Police Chief Russ Whitman.

Initial reports indicate the shooting was accidental, but those reports have not been confirmed by officials. 

FIRST REPORT

An officer has reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the leg at a Franklin police firing range Friday morning. 

Medics were dispatched to the range in the 200 block of Baxter Drive around 10:50 a.m. in Franklin after the incident was reported. 

Dispatchers said the officer was already being removed to an area hospital, but their condition wasn’t immediately known.
