Mystery gold coin donor returns for another year of giving

SPRINGFIELD — A local tradition of giving continued again this holiday season in Springfield.

For at least the past five years, an anonymous donor has dropped a mysterious gold coin into the Salvation Army’s red kettle. This year, even as many people are struggling financially due to the COIVD-19 pandemic, the tradition continued.

The coin was a South African gold coin, worth about $1800. This year it was dropped in the red kettle outside of the Bechtle Ave Kroger on Thursday, wrapped in a fifty dollar bill.

Whether it be paying utility bills, hosting camps for kids with disabilities, or providing clothes and food for those in need; the money collected by the Salvation Army goes to helping the community.

The Salvation Army says it doesn’t want to learn the identity of the gold coin donor. They look forward to the tradition each year, as it motivates others to give whatever they can.
