More than 400,000 vaccine doses expected in Ohio in coming days pending Johnson & Johnson approval

More than 400,000 vaccine doses could be coming to Ohio in the coming days if the FDA approves the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for emergency use later this week.

Gov. Mike DeWine said Ohio will receive 310,000 first doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines next week and an additional 91,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are expected to be delivered to the state once it is made available.

“With this increase in doses, Ohio will add additional new vaccine provider sites including some Meijer and Walmart locations and more independent pharmacies,” the Governor’s Office said. “Providers that are currently receiving vaccines - including RiteAid, Kroger, CVS, Walgreens, local health departments, and hospitals - can anticipate larger shipments.”

Several counties in the Miami Valley area are seeing significantly larger shipments than they’ve been seeing in recent weeks.

Clark County Combined Health District said it will have large clinics next week as they anticipate receiving 3,500 doses of vaccine, which is five times the amount of vaccine they received three weeks ago.

Preble County is anticipating a 700 vaccine dose delivery next week, said Health Commissioner Erik Balster. Balster said the county health department has only been receiving about 100 to 300 doses per week.

Registration for both Preble County and Clark County vaccinations was opened on Thursday morning.

Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County will be opening its vaccination registration for next week on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.

Spokesman Dan Suffoletto said the county will receive 4,700 doses next week, which is a combination of both first and second round doses. Montgomery County’s number does not include the vaccinations that are being sent to pharmacies, grocery chains or hospitals, as those doses don’t pass through the local health department, he said.

Champaign County and Miami County said its health districts will each receive 500 doses each of the vaccines next week.

Darke and Mercer County health departments report they each will receive 400 first round doses of the vaccines.
