Ohio State Highway Patrol IDs driver in deadly Sugarcreek Twp. tanker crash

Coroner called to crash involving overturned tanker in Sugarcreek Twp.

SUGARCREEK TWP. — UPDATE @ 6:30 p.m.: Todd Schaffer, 45, of Centerville, died in the two-vehicle crash in the 3700 block of Wilmington Dayton Road, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol post in Xenia.

Schaffer was partially ejected from a 1992 International water tanker that ended up on its side in a field. He was southbound on Wilmington Dayton Road, just north of Social Row Road, when he approached a pickup truck, hit it as he swerved to the right and continued off the side of the road.

The tanker overturned and hit a power pole before reaching the field, the patrol said. Schaffer died at the scene of the accident, which was reported about 12:50 p.m.

Robert Glardon, 20, of Bellbrook, was driving the Dodge Ram pickup that was struck. He was was stopped in traffic behind a vehicle that was waiting for oncoming traffic to clear so it could make a right turn into a driveway.

Investigators said Schaffer was not wearing his seat belt. Glardon was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, the state patrol said.

Dayton Power & Light crews were dispatched to repair damage to the pole and lines knocked down in the crash.
