The labor market experienced a setback last month, losing more than 20,000 jobs. Economists suggested the decline could be a sign that the labor market is losing momentum.

In addition to last month’s losses, job gains from the two previous months were revised downward by more than half. This shift in the employment picture may complicate upcoming decisions for the Federal Reserve regarding interest rates.

Nicole Bachaud, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter, described the current situation as an environment of significant uncertainty. She noted that fluctuations in inflation and price volatility are impacting the workforce.

“What that points to is a labor market that is really walking on eggshells. As we see price volatility, fluctuations in inflation, ... and it’s also leading a lot of workers to exit the labor force entirely,” Bachaud said.

The new data may influence upcoming decisions from the Federal Reserve. A weak employment picture typically does not support an interest rate hike.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet next month. The central bank will receive additional data before that meeting to further evaluate the state of the economy.
