The natural gas leak was reported around 6:50 a.m. at the Sunoco gas station in the 300 block of West Market Street.

The work crew, hired as a part of a remodeling project at the station, hit an eight-inch gas line, causing the leak, according to a Troy Fire Department official.

Vectren crews were able to contain the leak around 9:30 a.m., but further repairs will be needed, officials said.

Several homes were evacuated while Vectren worked to contain the leak. A school bus was called to a Walgreens parking lot east of the leak where evacuated residents were able to sit and stay warm while crews worked.

Vectren officials will be going into homes near the ruptured line to make sure they are safe before occupants can return.

West Market Street will be blocked in both directions for several hours while crews continue to work in the area, officials said.

No injuries or illnesses were reported.
