Former head of Ohio Republican Party joins the 2022 Senate race

Jane Timken

Jane Timken, the former head of the Ohio Republican Party, announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate today. Timken, a Cincinnati native, lives in Canton and had been the Ohio GOP Chair since January, 2017. She resigned her party post earlier this month to explore a bid for the Senate. In her announcement on Twitter this morning, Timken said she is running for the Senate “to fight for the Trump agenda, stop socialism dead in its tracks and be a champion for all Ohioans.”

She becomes the second Republican to join the race. Earlier this month, former Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel announced his candidacy. He too says he will carry the agenda of former President Donald Trump.

Timken, Mandel and perhaps several others will clash in the Republican primary election in 2022. No Democrats have formally announced their candidacy yet, although Congressman Tim Ryan of northeast Ohio appears ready to run. Former Ohio Health Director, Dr. Amy Acton, is also considering a run for the Senate. The winner will replace current Ohio US Senator Rob Portman, who announced earlier that he will not be running for re-election.
