As flu, COVID-19 cases move out Norovirus moves in; What symptoms look like

DAYTON — As we move out of Flu Season and continue to watch COVID-19 cases, another sickness is on the rise — Norovirus.

Norovirus, commonly known as the stomach flu, is very similar to COVID when it comes to symptoms, how it spreads and how long it takes to feel symptoms once a person is in contact with it.

According to Mayo Clinic, the most common symptoms of the virus are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain.

Joseph Allen, regional medical director at Priemer Health, told News Center 7′s Dontre Drexelius that Norovirus is highly contagious.

He said he has seen an uptick of Norovirus cases in the past month.

Allen said in his smaller practice he has seen a dozen or so patients who are suspected to have Norovirus.

In larger practices, Allen estimates between 30 to 50 cases within a month.

The Center for Disease Control said between August of Last year and April this year, there have been close to 700 cases reported in the United States.

Last year during the same period that number was only a little more than 170 cases.
