Fiancé of wing walker to rebuild crashed plane

Wing walker Jane Wicker died at the Vectren Dayton Air Show last year with the plane she couldn't stop talking about.

Now, the fiancé who survived her can't stop talking about Jane and her plane that crashed on June 22, 2013.

"I think of her all the time," said Rock Skowbo. "Just like she couldn't bring up a conversation without talking about her plane, I usually can't finish a conversation without talking about Jane."

Wicker was sitting on the inverted side of the plane's wing during the fatal crash that killed her and pilot Charlie Schwenker. To honor her, Skowbo wants to restore "Aurora," the plane the wing walker loved.

According to a wedding website made by the couple, they planned to wed on Wicker's plane while it was in flight at an air show this year.

Skowbo started rebuilding the plane by coming back to Dayton about a month after the crash to salvage parts.

"It was a very somber moment," he said.

While in Dayton he was only able to save a large part of the tail and several pieces of hardware.

"There are very few parts to salvage, unfortunately," Skowbo said.

The plane, a 450 HP Stearman, was custom built to her specifications.

"Jane took 22 years of air show experience and she had that airplane built by the top Stearman airplane builders in the country, so it was a very special and unique airplane," he said.

Rebuilding the plane is already underway, Skowbo said, adding the project is supported by other aviation enthusiasts.

"The air show community seems to like the plane," he said. "People want to go for rides in it and so I want to bring it back."

He said the plane should be ready by this time next year.

"We're actually pretty busy with it," Skowbo said. "I just got the new wings in."

Wicker was the third act at the 39th Vectren Dayton Air Show after the Wright-B Flyer and the F-86 Sabre. Veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed when his stunt plane crashed and burned at the 2007 Vectren Dayton Air Show.
