Driving after a winter storm? Ice, snow flying off vehicles could be hazardous

MIAMI VALLEY — A week ago the Miami Valley started getting hit with the biggest winter storm we have seen in years, and what the storm left behind is still dangerous for some drivers.

In Montgomery County, three drivers filed crash reports that were snow and ice related, and in the state of Ohio there is no law that can prevent these kind of accidents.

Ohio law says drivers must scrape off ice and snow from their front and back windshields, headlights and tail lights before they start driving, but the law does not include the hood, roof and trunk.

“If you’re behind somebody too close and the glass will actually break, because it’s like a rock almost hitting it when it’s solid ice so we’re seeing people with all kinds of damage from ice hitting their cars,” said Matt Miller with Carl’s Body Shop in Dayton.

On Monday, “ice missiles” hit a Lebanon Trooper’s car, based out of the Lebanon Post.

East of Cincinnati, in Adams County, ODOT News Center 7 video of one of its plows. being hit by flying ice hit and is now out of service.

“First and foremost, safety is the most important. Pull off to the side of the road, assess the damage done to your vehicle,” said Carrie Johnson, Insurance Agent.

That’s the first piece of advice Johnson gives any policy holder if they have weather-related damage. Then call your insurance company to file a comprehensive claim.

It’s also a good idea to file a police report to help figure out if someone is at fault.

Carl’s Body Shop says it is staying very busy.

“With all the snow and ice last week was crazy. We got people that are just sliding everywhere,” Miller said.

But he can’t get much work done. because of the continuing supply chain issues.

“When they shut down all these factories, because of COVID, getting everybody to come back to work and build these parts, they went through all the parts supply and now we’re short-handed on parts,” Miller said.

Dash cams are also a good investment, as they can record flying ice on the road and capture license plates.
