Deputy shares how she helps keep community safe this Halloween

BEAVERCREEK TWP. — As kids in costumes made their way through Beavercreek Township, Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Crystal Bowers made her rounds.

News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis spend the evening riding along with Bowers to see how she and other law enforcement keep the community safe this Halloween.

“I’m hoping to try to find some children outside and hand out some candy,” Bowers said.

Interacting with people in the community is what Bowers enjoys, but she knows she still has to have her guard up.

“Anything can happen, it’s one of those nights people are in disguise and you don’t know who’s who,” she said.

She said one thing the department is mindful of is all the people on the roads.

“Even coming into work, the traffic drivers is the issue, people are driving a little bit erratic, a little bit irresponsible so those are things that we have to look out for kids that are running across the street and walking,” Bowers said.

When it comes to candy, Bowers said there’s always a concern about what it could be laced with. So checking candy is a must.

“Unfortunately that’s the time we live in,” she said.

Xenia resident Amy Reeves brought candy to the Greene County courthouse to be scanned Monday night.

The x-ray machine cannot detect narcotics, but it can help deputies identify foreign objects.

“Before anyone eats it in my family I have it checked first and then I go through it with a comb and a magnet,” Reeves said.

As she went door to door for trick or treat, Reeves said she tried to keep an eye on all the children that were out and about.

“We help each other just to make sure that everybody’s safe,” Reeves said.

Something deputies, like Bowers, appreciate.

“Safety first, we want to eliminate as much issues as possible,” she said.

Bowers said the county will probably be more proactive in having a presence for the remainder of Halloween night.
