Deaf student, 10, left alone after bus stop error

A 10-year-old deaf student was dropped off at the wrong bus stop by a Dayton Public Schools bus driver and was left alone for about 45 minutes Tuesday.

According to the girl’s mother, the family had recently changed the bus stop for the 10-year-old from their apartment to a local day care.

The driver of the bus dropped the girl off at the apartment instead of the local day care, the mother said.

Dayton Public Schools officials said they apologized for the mistake and have taken action to resolve the issue.

The mother said the child was left alone in the apartment hallway for 45 minutes until she arrived home.

Dayton Public Schools’ spokeswoman Jill Moberley issued a statement Thursday:

“Our student’s driver dropped her off at her former stop on Tuesday, after a change in afternoon bus stop locations requested by her mother had just gone into effect. It was the driver’s responsibility to note the change and deliver the student to her new stop. The driver and supervisor have personally apologized to Ms. Cook for failure to note the change, and the driver has been referred for discipline.”
