Dayton Police cracking down to reduce speeding violations, accidents

DAYTON — The Dayton Police Department worked with the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s aviation unit Wednesday to conduct a monthly Joint Traffic Enforcement Detail, where they focused on reducing crashes.

This month’s detail monitored speeding on I-75 and Rt. 35 within the Dayton city limits.

Sgt. Gordon Cairns, supervisor of the Dayton Police Crash Reconstruction Unit, stated that 88 percent of citations from yesterday were for speeding 20 mph over the set speed limit.

“We want to remind everyone that in the city of Dayton, the speed limit on interstate 75 and Rt. 35 are 55 mph. We do have an active construction zone right now in the southern end of Dayton on I-75 on Edwin C. Moses, and the speed limit in that area is 50 mph,” Cairns said.

Cairns confirmed that three different vehicles sped 20 miles over the speed limit yesterday in an active construction zone during dangerous road conditions from a morning snowsquall.

“We are mixing bad weather and bad driving behavior on top of a construction zone with active people working. It’s a recipe for bad news when it comes to accidents,” said Cairns.

A car was also reported to have been cited for driving double the speed limit in a school zone on Salem Ave., reaching 41mph.

According to Cairns, one notable citation from yesterday occurred on Rt. 35 when a vehicle sped 117 mph, which was also over double the speed limit.

Cairns said that the purpose of the traffic detail is to create safer driving conditions for those on the road.

“The whole goal of this operation is to encourage drivers to drive at the speed limit and a reasonable speed, and to reduce accidents.”
