Dayton fire crews search Great Miami River after kayak stolen from UD found

DAYTON — The Dayton Fire Department dispatched rescue boats to search the Great Miami River Tuesday morning after an abandoned kayak was found.

The Dayton Fire Department dispatched rescue boats to the area of the Washington Street Bridge after a report of an abandoned kayak and lifejackets being found, Dayton Fire District Chief Nick Judge said.

Police ran the registration numbers from the kayak which indicated it had been stolen from the University of Dayton a couple of months ago, according to Judge.

Crews searched the area, but no one was found in the water so the search was suspended.

“No abandoned vehicles were found, no other evidence of anybody being here besides a kayak and four life jackets, and we don’t know how long that’s been here,” Judge said.
