Crews working to fill potholes in Xenia

XENIA — If you have driven around Xenia recently, chances are you’ve hit a pothole or two.

The good news is that there’s some relief coming soon.

The sound of scraping on the street is the sound of progress and potholes being covered up in Xenia.

Potholes can wreak havoc on cars, according to Derek Hamilton, who works for a towing service.

“It’s murder on these rigs going down the roads,” he said. “You damage tires, wheels, front end components.”

Xenia city crews were out today repairing areas both north and south of Main Street.

They used a material called cold patch, but it’s only a temporary fix.

Potholes can be caused by changing temperatures, causing water to freeze and thaw on the roadways.

“You come by and fix it, but in a couple of weeks it’s dug right back out again,” Hamilton said.

The work is part of Xenia’s annual street program.

The city usually allocates about $500,000 for roads. But this year, the city estimates it’ll spend about $2 million.

Gina Parks hopes that the city can eventually get to her neighborhood to fix her street.

“I live down Elm Street and the potholes are just horrible,” she said.

Residents said that the potholes just aren’t damaging to cars.

“There was a big chunk hole and it was dusk and I didn’t see it,” said Lynne Carroll of Xenia Twp. “It was right at a handicap parking space and I tripped and banged my knee up.”

While potholes have been plaguing Xenia, residents are happy to see the city repairing the streets.

The city is scheduled to use hot patch on potholes later this spring.
